Battle of Midway
Friday, June 5, 2009 at 9:12PM As we enter the weekend, we remember the 65th anniversary of D-Day and the beginning of the end (as opposed to Stalingrad which was the high water mark) of the Third Reich. Had D-Day been delayed many of the German troops including a half a dozen SS Panzer divisions (many of which had been moved to the west to rest and refit) could have been moved to the east to take on the advancing Russians who were approaching the borders of Poland. As it was, the invasion of France brought troops away from the eastern front and the Italian front.
However, let us not forget that June 4-7 is the 67th anniversary of the Battle of Midway. This affair was very much the high water mark of the Japanese Empire. It was also a body blow to the Japanese Imperial Navy where four aircraft carriers, their flight squadrons and crews were lost.
Although the death nell of the Imperial Navy was to come two years later in the Philippines sea, this battle proved far more than the Coral Sea that the US Navy had the measure of the Japanese.
